Abstract

system including R&D and design, engineering construction, fuel cycle, operation
and maintenance, and equipment manufacturing has been formed. By the end of

December 2020, China’s commercial nuclear power generation units reached 48,
with a total installed capacity of 49.88 million kilowatts, accounting for 2.27% of
China’s total installed power capacity; the annual nuclear power generation was
366.243 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of approximately 5.02% compared to

last year, and accounted for 4.94% of the cumulative power generation. 17 nuclear
power units were under construction, with a total installed capacity of 18.53 million

kilowatts. The capacity of units under construction continues to rank first in the
world. The world’s first reactor of the independent third-generation nuclear power
HPR 1000, Fuqing Nuclear Power Unit 5, has been successfully connected to the
                 ഠ߶॓࿐໓ངԛϱഠϱಃ෮Ⴕ
grid for power generation, becoming the world’s only third-generation pressurized
water reactor nuclear power unit that was completed on schedule. Major nuclear power
projects for large-scale advanced pressurized water reactors and high-temperature gas-

cooled reactors continue to advance steadily. HPR 1000 has been greatly improved
in the level of digital intelligence. The preliminary work of small modular reactor
demonstration projects has been progressing in an orderly manner. The fourth-

generation nuclear energy technology research and development was stepping up its
layout. Major breakthroughs were made in the research and development of the fusion

reactor. Nuclear fuel production and operation have been remained stable, uranium
exploration has made important progress, independent innovation capabilities in
nuclear fuel processing have continued to improve, spent fuel and radioactive waste
management in nuclear power plants have been further strengthened, and industrial

capabilities have been further enhanced. Nuclear power equipment autonomy and
localization capabilities have been further enhanced, and a batch of key equipment for

the third-generation independent nuclear power plants of HPR 1000 and CAP 1400
has been manufactured locally and delivered in batches. The nuclear energy industry
management, nuclear safety supervision and epidemic prevention and control have

                                                                               245
