Abstract
The development and utilization of nuclear energy is a major achievement in
the development of modern science and technology. In the past half-century, nuclear
energy has provided more than 18% of the electricity in developed economies and is an

important pillar energy source for achieving carbon peaks. By the end of 2020, there
were 442 nuclear power units in operation worldwide, with a total installed capacity
of more than 392 million kilowatts; 53 nuclear power units under construction, with
a total installed capacity of 56.393 million kilowatts. The nuclear power units under
operation and construction are distributed in 34 countries and regions. In 2020, 5 units
were newly connected to the grid for power generation worldwide, including 2 units
in China, 1 unit in Russia, 1 unit in Belarus, and 1 unit in South Korea. The focus
of nuclear power development is shifting from traditional nuclear power countries
to emerging economies. More and more countries are considering or launching plans
to build nuclear power plants. At the same time, ’the world’s major nuclear power
countries continue to deploy their efforts in small modular reactors, fourth-generation
reactors, and fusion reactors. The forecast data of the world’s major energy/nuclear
power organizations indicate that the global installed capacity of nuclear power will
increase signifi cantly in the future.
This report objectively analyzes and expounds the development of China’s
nuclear energy in 2020 and the main results achieved. China’s installed nuclear power
generation capacity has ranked third in the world, and a complete industry chain
