Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant Sets New Record with 49.15 TWh of Grid-Connected Electricity Output in 2025
On 2 February, Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (Hongyanhe Nuclear Power) officially released its operating performance report for 2025, announcing a record annual grid-connected electricity output of 49.15 terawatt-hours (TWh).
Located in Hongyanhe Town, Wafangdian City, Liaoning Province, the Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant saw the completion and commissioning of all six units in Phases I and II in June 2022. With a total installed capacity of 6.71 gigawatts (GW), the plant represents an investment of 90 billion yuan in total.
According to Zhang Weidong, spokesperson for Hongyanhe Nuclear Power, grid-connected electricity output has grown steadily since the start of commercial operations. As of 31 December 2025, cumulative grid-connected electricity output had reached 380.87 TWh. Compared to coal-fired power plants of equivalent scale, this output corresponds to a reduction of approximately 115 million tons of standard coal consumption and a reduction of around 352 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions — an environmental benefit comparable to planting 857,000 hectares of forest across Liaoning.
Zhang noted that all six units remained fully under control throughout 2025, maintaining excellent nuclear safety performance with no unplanned reactor shutdowns. The plant successfully met its annual safety production targets, completing three outage cycles while keeping safety and quality conditions well under control.
