China’s “Artificial Sun” Achieves Breakthroughs in Superconducting Magnets
China has made new progress in its “artificial sun” fusion project, with two domestically developed superconducting magnets for fusion reactors passing technical acceptance and full parameter testing, the Institute of Plasma Physics, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, announced on 27 June.
The toroidal field (TF) superconducting magnet — the largest superconducting component of the Comprehensive Research Facility for Fusion Technology (CRAFT) — has completed its final fabrication and passed technical acceptance by experts. Meanwhile, a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) central solenoid (CS) coil has also successfully passed full-parameter testing, with core performance reaching internationally leading levels.
These technological advances lay a solid foundation for the future development of China’s fusion reactors and are expected to significantly enhance the country’s independent R&D and engineering capabilities in related fields.
